here in yuma it will be mostly to and from work, sand roads, typical dirt roads & such, maybe possible longer rides on the street. but when i go to my brothers house in big pine, ca it will be more single track and mountains. i was looking at the drz400 or 650 but found out today the kawi/suzuki dealership stoped selling suzukis. if only yamaha sold a bigger bike...

a big turn off for the kawasaki is that ridiculous faring with a headlight that doesnt move and the 8.3" of ground clearance. but i like that you can put the bags on it.

For the type of riding you are doing, I would suggest the Suzuki DR650, the DR400 is really a dirt bike that is street legal. 95% dirt.

There are companies that make bags for the DR or you can get some generic bags. I have some cheap camo looking things I use. They have held up ok.

The ones i used did not melt. The exhaust is under the side cover, so it should protect them.
Keep in mind, when looking for a bike, buy what fits, not what accessories you can get. You can always make something work for you.

West side rider here. I have a KTM XC-W 530 decked out for DS rides. My brother and I did a huge loop through Death valley, cerro Gordo, barker ranch and Saline valley last spring. It was my first overnighters on 2 wheels. Great time. Looking for more whenever possible. I have Tuesdays and wednesdays off, so if anyone wants to ride PM me I'm game.
